Resident Evil: Developer Q&A

Here is a question and answer session with the Capcom team that developed Resident Evil: Degeneration for the N-Gage platform.

How does Resident Evil: Degeneration fit into the storyline of the Resident Evil console games?

The game starts seven years after “Raccoon City Tragedy” (1998), which is depicted in the console game “Resident Evil IV”. The main characters are Leon (Resident Evil II and IV) and Claire (Resident Evil II and Code Veronica).

What is the premise or story in Resident Evil: Degeneration?

The game, part-based on the full-length CGI motion picture of the same name, focuses on the release of a deadly virus by a terrorist at a US airport and follows Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield, as they attempt to destroy the virus and prevent it from being dispersed across the country. The DVD/BD will be released at almost same time.

What weapons and equipment are available to the players?

Handheld gun, knife, shot gun, magnum, sub-machine-gun, rifle and hand grenades.

Why did you choose to develop Resident Evil: Degeneration for mobile and not console?

Because the mobile phone has the largest market penetration of any gaming device. Users will be able to enjoy the link between the game and the film because the game will be released at the same time as the DVD.

What are the differences between designing a game for mobile and for a console?

The biggest difference is the user type and the data volume. Compared with console, mobile has a much wider variety of user likes and tastes, so it’s preferences. Also data volume on mobile is more limited than console, so you need to design more carefully.

How long did it take to develop?

About a year.

Why did you choose to premiere the game on N-Gage?

It is because the number of users is large and the integrated platform is attractive for us.

How was Capcom involved in the Resident Evil: Degeneration Sony Pictures film?

Resident Evil: Degeneration (Full-length CG Movie) is co-produced by Capcom and SPE (Japan).

Resident Evil has been phenomenally successful as both a game and a film - what do you think of the secret of its continuing success?

Resident Evil was the first game to focus on psychological horror as its main theme, and that has proved to have universal appeal. Also, the games have pushed the capabilities of every device that they’ve been developed for.

Do you have any plans to develop the much anticipated Resident Evil 5 for N-Gage?

There are no plans yet; however, there is a possibility.

Do you have any plans to develop future N-Gage titles?

Yes. We have plans - as soon as the information is available, we’ll let you know!

Are there any features of the game which are exclusive to N-Gage? What kind of online or Arena features are included in the game?

The network-ranking and point pick-ups.

The graphics in Resident Evil: Degeneration are very high quality. What part do they play in the game?

The vivid depiction of reality creates the fear in the game and brings it to life. We created the game to frighten users, so the graphics needed to be of the highest quality. (Our team has to act with sensitivity though!)

Looking for love in a ‘zombified’ world can be tough! It’s just so hard to find other zombies who you want to meet for a coffee, go to the movies with or just share a brain! No matter where I look it’s just getting harder to find those ravishing screen beauties that you see in Night of the Living Dead or Resident Evil. I mean, looks are important, but they’re not the ‘be all and end all’. All that has changed with the launch of new zombie dating site, zombiesingles.com.

A Facebook for the frightening, zombiesingles.com lets you connect with other zombies all over the world, and hopefully, you’ll meet a match who makes being undead worth living.

Using my saved images, and the new ones I took with my webcam, I used the amazing onsite ‘Zombifier’ software to add more blood and pale my complexion to give me those film star looks. I also let other zombies know about my hobbies and personal interests, hanging around in grave yards, eating brains, chasing the living, you know, the usual.

In the build up to the release of Metal Gear Solid Mobile, N-Gage.com gives fans new and old a bit of background to the upcoming title. For N-Gage fans, this is the first chance to get to grips with the title on mobile. For old hands, it fills in parts of the story that have, until now, been a mystery.

Metal Gear Solid Mobile (MGSM) is set between Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and re-introduces some of the main protagonists and antagonists in the game. With so many different characters, knowing who’s who in the Metal Gear Solid series can sometimes be, quite frankly, a nightmare.

This quick and concise guide will hopefully give you a bit more insight into who the characters in MGSM are and what their role is in the game. It also clears up who is related to who, how, and why, so you only get lost in the game…

Solid Snake
The main protagonist of Metal Gear Solid, Solid Snake is an expert spy.  Working for FOXHOUND, a secret espionage unit, the focus of his undercover work is disarming Metal Gear, a nuclear armed mecha (the huge gun toting robots).

Solid Snake goes onto form Philanthropy, an anti-Metal Gear organization tasked with ridding the world of all Metal Gears.  Later in the series it is revealed that Solid Snake is the clone son of Big Boss, his sworn enemy…

Hobbies: Skateboarding, athletics, working alone
Tries to avoid: Big gun wielding metal robots

Big Boss
The mastermind behind the Metal Gear threat, Big Boss is formerly Liquid Snake’s commanding officer but later reveals himself as the head of the Metal Gear operation.

Big Boss provided the DNA used in the original creation of Solid Snake and Liquid Snake in an earlier project called Les Enfants Terribles.

Hobbies: Cheating death, war mongering
Tries to avoid: Solid Snake, flame throwers

Liquid Snake
Liquid Snake is Solid Snake’s clone in arms and appeared in the original Metal Gear Solid. The second of the Big Boss clones, created during the Les Enfants Terribles project in the early 1970s, Liquid Snake is a follower of Big Boss and has previously tried to kill Solid Snake.

Hobbies: Wreaking evil bonhomie, getting tattoos
Tries to avoid: The ageing process

Col. Roy Campbell
The new commanding officer of FOXHOUND is Col. Roy Campbell. He is Snake’s lifeline in the game, acting as the main radio contact. He provides details about mission objectives and gives hints and tips throughout the game.

Hobbies: Using high tech equipment, wearing berets
Tries to avoid: Big Boss

NGS: Nokia Games Summit Awards

Jaakko Kaidesoja at the Nokia Games Summit

So, we’ve told you who the winners of the Mobile Games Innovation Challenge at the Nokia Games Summit were but here’s a bit more of an insight into the rest of the awards evening itself.

For starters, the anticipation of winning the coveted Nokia prize wasn’t the only storm brewing on the evening, with the event being surrounded by some of the worst weather in Rome’s history. But even gale force winds and torrential down-pours couldn’t put a dampener on the event.

Puzzle solving and unravelling mysteries were the themes of the lavish awards ceremony. Based on Dirk Dagger and the Fallen Idol, the night saw attendees crack clues to complete an 8 digit code to get free copies of the award-winning game.

The stylish event took place at the Castel Sant’Angelo where the winners of the Mobile Games Innovation Challenge were announced. The spooky setting was the perfect place to find out who won the grand prize of a pre-publishing contract with Nokia for their game and the small matter of 40,000 EUR.

A Different Game claimed the glory with Ghostwire, a game that gets you talking to ghosts by taking photos of them with your device, amongst other cool features.

But, from an attendee’s point of view, it was Melokey from Jadestone and C4M who clinched it, winning the internal SMS vote that took place during the afternoon of the first day.
