Three Midnight Pool Reviews
Midnight Pool was just released for the N-Gage last Friday but already we have three reviews of this new game out there.
First up, All About N-Gage’s Steve Litchfield has his take in this thorough review:
“As usual with the ‘Midnight’ series of sports games, there’s a bit of a seedy night-club atmosphere, brought to life here by 3D animations and 3D-modelled pool halls. As each shot is taken, you get to see how it plays out on set of TV-style angles and there are digital sound effects to match. The production values applied to all of this are quite high.”
Overall, he finds the game fairly casual in approach and too easy for a hardcore gamer.
For a completely different take, there is Nok-Nok’s review. They call it one of the best N-Gage titles yet.
“The last N-Gage game we looked at (The Sims 2 Pets) was pretty dismal, but Nokia’s gaming platform is back on track with this little gem. It’s a straight-up arcade version of pool shrunken to fit on your phone — and for our money it’s one of the best N-Gage titles yet…
“Overall we’d have no hesitation recommending Midnight Pool to anyone with an N-Gage ready phone — it’s one of the best made titles around.”
Finally, hOAx over at N-Gation has put up his thoughts on the game, beginning with a history of the game from earlier incarnations:
“Midnight Pool is no new contender, it was released on the good old 6630 and many other older Symbian devices. I remember playing this game on the good old 6630 I used to own and I loved it. The graphics were fantastic, the sound was great too and the game play was addictive but that was nearly 3 years ago and it’s released again, were our expectations met? Is it improved?”
Overall he ends up a little disappointed too. So there you have it, three reviews, three different opinions. So what’s yours? Remember you can download the free trial here.

Hi Simster, I’m afraid there is no news. I will ask once again before I go on vacation at the end of this week. Sorry, not sure what’s going on…

Ikona, here is another thought to convey to your “crew” before your summer break. N Gage is struggling a bit again. Let’s be honest about that. So why not throw a bone to help through the dry tough summer mont times - release one of the first generation Nokia produced N-Gage titles for FREE as “flashbacks” or something catchy like that (I assume Nokia has rights to them or could easily negotiate a one of payment to the developer for making the available for free). E.g. “one golden oldie for free a week” campaign? As long as you would not release games that directly compete with existing new or “coming soon” titles you would be.. err.. golden. You would gain an amazing amount of positive buzz and free publicity and finally some signifant traffic on the boards etc. Also, releasing the origianl One, for example, for free could boost the sales of the new version. Just picture this: Pathway to Glory… the only truly legendary first gen game made available for free… would that be sweet or what?
Unless, of course, you are actually working on revamping e.g. the said PtG for the new platform. That too would be sweet too of course.
Just a thought. I know you have considered it. Please reconsider it.

Simster, N-Gage didn’t officially launch until April this year so it’s more like three months.
And they’re not just delaying old phones either, the N78 was supposed to have N-Gage at its launch in June but it still doesn’t have it.

free 1st gen ngage games would be great, mind you i would pay for them to be able to play them on my n95. Their way better games than the rubbish games we been getting lately. Pool i think is rubbish and over priced. Not buying it.

Hmmm, so AAN says “average”, Nok Nok says “greatest game yet” and N-Gation says “pretty cool.”
I need to get on updating my blog and submitting some reviews myself!
July 1st, 2008 at 5:38 am
if you go 2 the sites and read full reviews 2 out 3 was not impressed.i think it’s actually a step up in class after the atrocious sims pets. When are we going 2 get a game what nokia publishing was involved in ? They are much better games with awsome game play.did nokia delay them b/c the piracy thing?

Viipotaja, it’s a good idea but I don’t think it’s easy as all that, we don’t hold the rights to all those games, they would need to be compatible with the new platform, tested, etc… but it’s a fun idea I can pass on to the management…
Sonicsayin, I am looking into that and will let you know what I find out today.

Sonic: That fix is in the works. It has been planned for a while. It is not yet ready. More clarity tomorrow.

Glad to know that fix is in the works because i am on 3530 points and I think by the time i reach 10,000 the bug should be fixed hopefully. Hey ikona any news on when bounce boing voyage and pro series golf are coming out. Can’t wait because the nokia games are the best of the bunch in my opinion on this ngage platform. Just look at Creatures of the deep, Space Impact Kappa Base and System Rush Evolution which are all quality and Snakes Subsonic is actually quite fun aswell.
