Mobile gaming evolves – Ovi Store is here
We’ve been busy evolving our mobile gaming service and building up the portfolio of games in Ovi Store. Currently, we have more than a thousand games available in Ovi Store supported by 100 Nokia device models and are growing the platform and portfolio as quickly as possible.
If you haven’t checked out Ovi Store lately, we suggest you stop by store.ovi.com/games for the latest mobile games for your Nokia device. And what’s best, not only will you be able to get a wide variety of games like Pac-Man, The Sims 3 and Guitar Hero World Tour Mobile in the Ovi Store, but you will have access to hundreds of new ones like Sky Force Reload and EA SPORTS FIFA 10 from a wide range of publishers from 65 countries.
As we continue to move Nokia’s services under the Ovi umbrella, Ovi Store is the one-stop-shop for all your mobile content. If you’re looking for the latest apps, games and other mobile content, Ovi Store is available in more than 180 countries. And remember, content is for everyone so start downloading today.
So, you might ask, what will happen to the current N-Gage platform?
N-Gage games can be purchased until the end of September 2010. While the N-Gage.com site together with the N-Gage Arena and other community features will remain in operation throughout 2010, the Ovi Store will be the new central place for all the mobile games that Nokia and other publishers offer from this point forward. We will no longer publish new games for the N-Gage platform.
What will happen to N-Gage Arena?
N-Gage Arena will remain in operation throughout 2010 and players can e.g. keep posting their high scores until then. We understand that people value the ability to manage their games and communicate about them, and we are working on offering such community elements through Ovi. Games publishers are free to use community features of their choosing in their apps, the feature set is not defined by Nokia. Social Networking applications are some of the most downloaded on Ovi Store, emphasing the power of connecting people.
What will happen to my games?
Your games are safe - all your purchased N-Gage games will continue to work on your N-Gage compatible mobile device and they’re yours to keep. However, community features of the games will not be functional after 2010.
Do you have plans to bring community elements to the Ovi Store gaming experience?
Yes, we understand how important community is to our gamers. You can already post reviews of games and other apps in the Ovi Store. We are actively working on offering more community elements through Ovi and we encourage developers to use community features in their applications. Stay tuned – there’s more to come on this.
Why doesn’t Nokia keep N-Gage as a separate gaming platform?
As mobile gaming evolves and begins to encompass social gaming, we want to offer one store front with an even broader portfolio of games – games for everyone. It’s much more convenient to have one place to get all your mobile games, and this it what Ovi Store https://store.ovi.com/games provides. Mobile gaming is one of the most popular activities in the Ovi Store, with games being the #2 most downloaded category for premium content. And besides having all mobile games in one place, people can access other services like Mail, Maps, Music and many more via www.ovi.com.
What will happen to N-Gage.com?
The N-Gage.com site will remain in operation throughout 2010, with the exception of the N-Gage Store which will remain open until the end of September 2010. However, we recommend people to visit Ovi Store to play the latest games – many familiar games and so much more.
Will you stop shipping devices with the N-Gage application pre-installed?
We will continue to sell devices with N-Gage application pre-installed for some time, however we will no longer ship new devices with the application pre-installed.
Games will be available through the Ovi Store which is already supported by 100 Nokia device models and growing. Ovi Store will be pre-installed on most new compatible Nokia devices including Symbian S60 & Series 40 from Q4 2009.
Thank you for being part of the N-Gage community and your participation over the years. It is important we share this information with you first as we know how much the N-Gage Community means to you, and that being up to date on the latest gaming information is of importance.
We appreciate your contributions and loyalty to the N-Gage community and service, and we hope to continue to hear from you via Ovi. See you in the Games!

It’s a sad day for N-Gage fans
October 30th, 2009 at 9:03 am
wait - how will i be able to reinstall my n-gage games after the site is shut down?
every time i try to install an n-gage app, when i enter the activation code the app goes online to verify it. so, after 2010 i won’t be able to reinstall my n-gage games anymore? this is unpleasant.
i suppose since half of my n-gage purchases aren’t compatible with my n97 anyways, i’m sort of being weened off n-gage already. n-gage was/is much better than Ovi, in my opinion. my Ovi store account has already been terminated once because i posted lots of reviews. yeah. that never happened with n-gage. (if you’re curious, ovi store account termination is automatic if more than ~6 of your reviews are flagged by ANYONE as potentially inappropriate - mine were not abusive, but appear to have been flagged. ovi store team’s email address is undeliverable and i’ve never had a positive response from nokia care about this - so ovi store == very VERY bad. n-gage? pretty good.)
*sigh*
the best things in life always fade to pleasant memories.

This is very sad and I for one will miss them all. N-Gage was a great idea hit by a few runs of hard luck.
Thanks to Nokia and their hard-working teams for providing such a great platform.

Next year will be a sad day when Ngage closes it’s doors, I for one will miss Ngage, Mods & Adim very much. Why this had to happen is beyond me but thanks for making Ngage fun for me.

God bless N-Gage and all who sailed in her!
Seriously though, we’ve been following N-Gage for many years now at http://www.PocketGamer.co.uk, we’ve a dedicated section for both the 2.0 and the original platform on the site (and we’ll definitely be keeping those up for the forseeable) and we even helped with the official magazine last year.
Even though things didn’t work out as planned, we remain big fans of the devices which played a crucial part in evolving the gaming phone concept (and gave the world side-talking), the services (the N-Gage Arena was actually rather brilliant) and even more so the individuals and teams involved (having met and worked with some wonderful people over the years).
So RIP N-Gage and here’s hoping that Ovi may succeed where N-Gage faltered. We’ll be paying our respects with a series of articles in the coming days, so feel free to join us to share your memories and fave games from the N-Gage era.
October 30th, 2009 at 9:53 am
Congested, dude, picked this up on engadget feed. It’s a sad day. Hopefully all our future mobile gaming needs will be met by you and the team on Ovi.
RIP N-Gage - you were misunderstood by most and underappreciated by almost everyone. I may break out the original taco tonight and have a bash on Colin McRae Rally, or maybe see if there’s anyone to play Tiger Woods against still.
Good luck for the future!

Well, sad news. We supported N-Gage 1.0 and N-Gage 2.0 with loads of articles, news, reports and nearly 80 reviews, but I don’t think we’ll support Ovi. Nokia has been doing too many things wrong on the gaming side and the 2.0 support was a joke.
Sadly, Nokia has ruined it’s reputation in the mobile gaming industry. That’s what professionnels are telling us everyday, “off record” of course, but it’s a reality.

Finally, It happened.
I am so happy that we get into this point. N-Gage2 was simply a joke and build upon mistakes. You can’t build a strong building on a weak base and that was N-Gage2 present.
Now N-Gage/Ovi-Game you need to start working on qt with an opengl for N-Gage3 (Open It/ Release it to public /Price it) and you a ready to go.
What a nice day that starts to get even better

October 30th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
This a really bad bad move for Nokia. Its shares already dropped today when the announcement was made with 3%.
But it is more than that. It is normal from all the phone users the N-Gage to be a niche, because put it simply smartphone is a niche in Nokia phones and N-Series is a niche in smartphones (considering all E-Series, Xpress Music and X-Series, N-Series, and number series running s60 OS).
The bad move is when a company closes something with no replacemnt on the same level.
This happens with N-Gage closing – the N-Gage platform had a community behing with network gaming, reviews, discussions and much more, and this can be only patially replaced by Ovi gaming, some features will never be replaced.
So then, Nokia did a very bad move because maybe that “niche” of users were core funs of the N-Series. And Nokia lost that 5% or 10% or 20% of users which will be certanly attracted by the many gaming titles on other platforms.
Why would any company close something with no replacement at the same level?
In my opinion, Nokia should have announced that they rename N-Gage as “OVI-Gaming” or “OVI N-Gage Games”, keep the platform and completely integrate it in OVI with keeping the accounts, the people inbox, messages, reviews. Of course, that means Nokia had to do the integration of N-Gage in OVI, but they did not want that, they took the sort way and said bye-bye.
I would not be surprised if Nokia will also CUT ANY OTHER SERVICE in the future, CUT Share on OVI, cut OVI MAIL, CUT even OVI MAPS, cut Ovi Music, etc because of the same reasons: they were niche…
N-Gage was a service loved by many gamers, they had friends on the N-Gage platform, partners to play with and Nokia instead of keeping the accounts and merge them into OVI, they simply delete this. BAD MOVE.

How very annoying. I had the original N-Gage and enjoyed games on that one. But I didn’t buy a phone that was compatible with the N-Gage platform until 3 weeks ago, when I got myself a black E52, and instantly installed and bought a few games for it. And now it’s to be killed.
I think the N-Gage generation had three noticeable flaws to it.
1) It took too damn long for them to release it, they started to talk about releasing N-Gage to multiple S60 devices back in 2005, but we didn’t see it until 2008.
2) Due the fact it took them so long, the initial N-Gage compatible devices, turned out to not be compatible with N-Gage at all, like the N73 and N93.
3) And most importantly, the poor selection of games. Besides the Dirk Dagger games, there aren’t really anything that offer much of a story and at the same time the DD games offer a very poor replayability. The original N-Gage had some great RPGs like Rifts: Promise of Power and Shadowkey, but none of that on the N-Gage platform. Same with excellent turnbased games like Pathway to Glory and Civilization but none of that here either. And the kind of game I want to play the most, are RPGs. Instead we mostly got lightweight casual games, which isn’t really that different from the java games available.

Dear sir,
I am aware that Nokia constantly introduce new handsets with new features in market. We all know that fake note is a major problem in our economy, then why Nokia is not developing a handset device which can detect fake note? Just like common laser fake note detector available in the market? This can be the usp of Nokia, and i am sure it will be a profitable innovation for Nokia. Also Nokia should think of inventing a new device which can monitor Blood pressure & also Blood sugar of a parson.
October 31st, 2009 at 6:15 am
wow. coming up to renewal of my phone contract, I wanted something that would make my existing software and information relevant. Despite all the tempting items around I thought to stick with Nokia for their unique standing in a market saturated by apple/iphone wannabes. Not to knock them (apple/iphone) themselves but clearly their presence in the market has been without a doubt influential. Clearly so that Nokia wish to merge their n-gage customers with the ovi appstore one hence the ‘coup de grace’ announced.
With this as an indication of things to come, the mess-about with symbian builds and perhaps ‘maemo #’, I have re-evaluated my standing and needs in a phone and see that Nokia have nothing to offer me personally (of a unique selling point).
Goodbye Nokia. Hello Moto… or Android… or Apple.
It was fun.
Shalom.

This Is truely a sad, and a bit confusing day. Am I to understand that Nokia not only will move the web part of n-gage over to ovi, but also will close the n-gage platform all togheter… If so it is truely a sad day, and a bit hard to understand given the resources nokia has been using to re-develop n-gage the last past two years… One of the most apealing features about the n-gage is just that the n-gage platform, not unlinke the platform sony has for gamescores etc. for playstation, so this decion makes no sense to me.. [I will make a further article on my website soon...]
October 31st, 2009 at 9:03 am
Very sad news for the community and for the few excellent games the platform has, but it was unavoidable. N-Gage deserve its failure.
The question is why shutdown all the community services. Maintaining them costs nothing for a company like Nokia.

Well I bought NOKIA N95 in 2007. I loved it because of that it has a wonderful gaming platform N-GAGE. N95 broke down and next I bought NOKIA 5630 instead of other because I didn’t wanted to lose N-GAGE. Now you are saying that N-GAGE time is ending. That are really bad news because in my opinion by closing N-GAGE platform NOKIA will have to do something really impressive to don’t lose a big part of it’s customers.

And the greatest shame of all? Nokia released some amazing games that almost no one will ever play…

impossible to find specific applications, no search function from your phone, applications show up as compatible for 5800 only when still compatible with n97.
I’ve only ever had Nokia, however after some of your recent decisions i think its time to change to another phone manufacturer. I know i’m only 1 person but i suspect you will get a lot of people who will change phones.
On a more productive note, n-gage works well, you needed to make it compatible with 5800XM and advertise the hell out of it, thats how the iphone beats everyone, its a terrible phone but advertising gets the numbers

I had Nokia phones from 98 to 2008.
I played games on them 2 or 3 times a year.
Since 2008 I have an iphone and did not buy it for the games.
But I play games on it several times a week.
So I believe Apple was successful as a game platform.
I loved the Nokia phones before Symbian. Today I like iphone. Tomorrow maybe I’ll go to Android.

I believe one of the reason that N-gage 2.0 died is the lack of touchscreen support. Not that button-based games are bad, but touchscreen games is the way forward… (all thanks to iPhone)
Nokia, why not start afresh, release an N-gage application that only supports touchscreen phones? I understand that development cost are high, so drop support of button based games, release only touchscreen games, but still retain all the community services that N-gage is so famous for (point pickups, friends, trial, high scores). This will definitely give an edge to those iPhone and Android phone games.

Sad ending again….. good bye N-Gage…… It was a lot of fun with you….

Maybe Nokia open all Ngage-games for FREE DOWNLOAD by NGage-device owners ?
It’s will be a good END (maybe not Happy End of Ngage history)

What Nokia propose for players who like to play high or mid quality games (Ngage2.0 with satisfactory graphics and sound like ONE, Bounce Voyage, Prince of Persia, Dirk Dagger, Creatures of the Deep, Resident Evil etc.) ? OVI games? Same games for S40 and s60 platform? I don’t like it. I don’t like iPhone stylized pseudo-games. I like game console with real buttons control (vide N81, N95 and others) and with no PS3-like quality. NGage2.0 quality was enought for many good games.Ngage2.0 is (sorry was) easy enought for newbe players.
Nokia please do not imitate iphone store/platform - style in game distribution/quality/mass.
My next phone had to be Nokia N85, but now….

I said many months ago in the forums that N-gage was dead, and everyone said I was crazy. Now here’s the evidence to show I was right… My last post here. Went onto Android some months ago. A pitty Nokia didn’t get it right the second time around either…

RIP N-Gage, You will be missed. I hope the Ovi store will get some good games, If not maybe I will just go back to VNES and Pico-Drive. Or maybe jump to Samsung I heard they are supposed to have Hi-Def games for some of their touch screen phones. But I will never get the I-phone. Apple needs to change their slogan to: You need an app for that! Cant do any thing on that phone without an app.

Never a nice thing to see an old friend pass on. Worst part is that Nokia management are wholly to blame for the disaster of 2.0 and the downward spiral of the brand name. Their me-too idiocy had them starving N-Gage to try and feed Ovi in a pathetic, transparent attempt to compete with iTunes. They would have done better to grow N-Gage into an iTunes competitor with a community aspect like Last.FM or Facebook rather than just trying to copy the iTunes business model under a new name. Imitators fall and fail by the dozen, innovators get the glory. N-Gage was an innovator, Ovi is just another imitator. They hitched themselves to the wrong horse on this one.

It is very bad news. I have joined to N-Gage to community only this summer together with new N79 and I very much liked many games.
Losses Nokia in 2009 not an occasion to close this excellent game tools.
Yes, you continue to do excellent smart phones with tremendous functionality, but will lose a huge share of sales of your games sold through N-Gage Store.
To whom games for such considerable price if the records, it will be impossible to exchange remarks and sentences with friends and other players are necessary?
Nokia has fallen in my opinion…
November 8th, 2009 at 3:19 am
Is it just me or do all the games on the Ovi store look like total rubbish? One thing I liked about N-Gage was that at least it was fairly easy to tell which games were good just from the publisher, whereas browsing through the Ovi games store is just slow and tedious.
I’ve been a loyal Nokia user since 1998 - changing phones almost every two years (Nokia 8110, Nokia 3310, Nokia 7650, Nokia 6600, and now Nokia N95 8GB), not because I have any particular fondness for Nokia, but because those phones were all damn good and the best at the time they were manufactured. However, the trend I see is that Nokia are not managing to compete with other manufacturers anymore, and did not even really manage to encourage developers to capitalize on the technology used in their newer phones (e.g., 3D capability), which would have kept people loyal users satisfied or impressed new users.
One would have to be blind not to forsee that loyal Nokia customers/users would be disappointed by this apparent apathy, and the closure of the N-Gage service, I’m afraid, looks like the final nail in the coffin to many loyal Nokia users (like me). I really hope that Nokia can develop and market a significantly better platform and technology within the next one year. Otherwise, my next phone might just be an Android one.

I think I know what will happen when it closes and people need to redownload or reactivate their games. Nokia will just tell us: “tough…you’ll have to rebuy it on ovi”
It’s the part that says the service will continue to be available through 2010, but doesn’t mention what will happen afterwards that worries me. Are they saying it will cease to exist and our games will be useless if we reformat/reflash/replace our devices?
November 9th, 2009 at 5:16 am
My post was deleted?
Just confirms what I said really.
Guess nokia only want us to have an opinion if it’s in their favour.
Well done nokia. Good way to keep customers….not.
