New Update for N-Gage First Access
We know all of you are eager to get started with N-Gage First Access, and we are just as eager to get it into your hands and start hearing your feedback. We have teams of people around the world, literally, working overtime to deliver this experience to you.
Unfortunately, as can sometimes happen in software development, unexpected difficulties can occur. We have been doing an internal run with more than 1,000 global testers this week, and during this process we uncovered an issue we feel we need to address. Overall, the games and service are working smoothly, but because of this issue, we feel we could not release N-Gage First Access before the holidays as planned.
As we work on a solution, we will continue to polish the overall experience, ready more games for N-Gage First Access, carry on our extensive internal testing over the holidays, and prepare for the new year and the new wave of mobile play.

So does this definatly mean 08 or is there still a chance of 07?
December 20th, 2007 at 11:35 am
Wow! I’m shocked!!! HAHAHAHAHA. Whoever didn’t see this coming was obviously kidding themselves.
December 20th, 2007 at 11:43 am
N81 owners, are warming up the dedicated gaming buttons on their devices, sitting front and center waiting for the beginning of this N-Gage Saga. Nokia, … It’s better be worth it.
December 20th, 2007 at 12:09 pm
But the First Access was a publict beta test right? Why not release it, bugs is always present, see Xbox Live, that gets frequent updates.
Why do a 1000 tests same week as the release? Its stupid, because there isn’t any time left to fix something, only solution is to delay the release.
Bad. Too bad
Don’t shout to us again next time before it is really ready, and I mean 100% ready.
December 20th, 2007 at 12:18 pm
Released date is: When is Done
December 20th, 2007 at 12:19 pm
Mmmmmmm….
Tried not to believe…
However, new update firmware for N81…
December 20th, 2007 at 12:19 pm
Way to go Nokia, thanks for nothing. I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.
December 20th, 2007 at 12:29 pm
you are sucks, i shure this n-gage will be the same as the previous, you will lose, be sure, i hate now nokia ((((((((((((((((((((
December 20th, 2007 at 12:36 pm
for N95 8GB will be accessible after NOEL?
December 20th, 2007 at 12:44 pm
This has to be one of the worst launches ever. Nokia have really screwed this up and annoyed a lot of of people. Lesson - don’t give out dates when something is nowhere near ready plus don’t describe a public beta test as a launch because you’re so desperate not to lose face. The rush to get something (anything) out there has gone pear shaped and Nokia look like clowns. I honestly can’t be bothered with n-gage now and will simply purchase existing games for my mobile (n95 8gb). You can only wait for so long, not interested anymore.
December 20th, 2007 at 12:55 pm
showstopper!! showstopper!! showstopper!!
December 20th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
that it’s incredible, the worst launches ever. ..and there isn’t still a release date for N95…..
December 20th, 2007 at 1:37 pm
First Access? its normal beta test… why they not do its faster :((
December 20th, 2007 at 1:45 pm
Very disappointing. I work for a major network in Australia and have purchased an N81 in anticipation for the launch only last week. Should have seen this coming. I work in business acquisitions and a lot of my clients have been anticipating this also- I’m sure the large number of N-series owners I have sold to would be most upset. Come on Nokia, it’s time to deliver to your customers. I’m sure you will miss a landslide of sales before xmas, all those kids (young and old) with new toys and time on their hands…ouch!
December 20th, 2007 at 2:41 pm
I think some people do forget how the ps3 is Published.
Its normaly that software and hardware doesn´t works perfectly
as you like it. A later realese can be bigger, can have more Publicity and can be a better start.
December 20th, 2007 at 3:01 pm
i’m happy waiting a little longer to have a not so buggy ngage. You guys all complain now, but you’d complain even more if they launched it now and it crashed and you couldn’t play it.. Stop your complaining. And people saying they won’t play it, who are you kidding? As soon as it comes out, you know you’ll still get it..
Just don’t keep us waiting too long nokia.. But get it working right. If we have to wait, we expect it to be PERFECT. So delaying is only putting more on your own heads..
December 20th, 2007 at 3:02 pm
This is the biggest mistake Nokia ever done… We’re waiting for 3 months and can’t wait anymore.
December 20th, 2007 at 3:51 pm
To the other commenters…
Sure, i was looking forward to launch, but there have been mistakes on both sides.
We’re overbuilding the hype, but it’s not fair to start with criticisms - hell, we may even get the launch next week, for the new year.
Second, yes, Nokia do need to polish up with regards to continual push backs, but they do want us to have a good launch.
Alerif, you’ve been waiting 3 months? Some of us have been waiting since the conception at the E3 events, a good couple of years.
It’s a shame the announcement wasn’t made sooner, but let’s just do what we can to HELP nokia speed things up instead of throwing complaints their way.
December 20th, 2007 at 3:53 pm
Ikona - could you not release the “Discover N-Gage” app for download from the site to satisfy some appetites for now? I know it’s a bit of a sub-standard filler, but for those who don’t already have the app, it could show them what this is about.
December 20th, 2007 at 3:55 pm
While i agree with kris, i do have to say i am very disappointed with the progress and that it took nokia until the end of the proposed launch week to let us know that a bug serious enough to delay the launch by yet another week maybe two has been discovered. If the code is in general working, i feel that providing it is safe and won’t brick the phone, then nokia should release it just to give us the reassurance that the product is on its way. And if the bug is bad enough to brick phones or similar, then i’m a little worried that it has taken nokia so long to find it! Please bring us working code and a good roster of games, very soon! Peace out x
December 20th, 2007 at 5:37 pm
it sucks!working overtime is not the point…if this team can’t deliver the product even after overtime working…I really suggest Nokia find someone else to do it or just never announce the delivery date next time!
December 20th, 2007 at 6:34 pm
Nokia looks it’s reputation because of this, at lease for me.
December 20th, 2007 at 6:41 pm
Why not wait a little bit more time, let’s see what really it is.
December 20th, 2007 at 6:59 pm
Aw, give ‘em a break. Its a complicated thing and something came up they didn’t expect. I would rather wait until they had more games anyway. Later
December 20th, 2007 at 7:57 pm
ya bit of a shame really,
Wade has a good point about the “not for Christmas” point of view. Bad for business >.
December 20th, 2007 at 10:09 pm
why nokia? just give us a launch date,we wont mind even if its february 2008.
Delaying things every week is not good.
December 20th, 2007 at 11:27 pm
Is there a new firmware updat for the N81 dec 20th? Where?
December 21st, 2007 at 12:13 am
There must be something like a curse over the NGAGE brand. What is universally considered the worst handheld ever made (Ngage calssic) now gets the worst ever made launch for its successor. How can Nokia hope to regain some consideration for the Ngage name if it continues to put errors and shame on every effort? I’ll stick to normal third party games for my N95 8Gb (DAMN YOU NOKIA,HOW CAN YOU STILL DON’T PROVIDE A RELEASE DATE FOR NGAGE PLATFORM ON YOUR FLAGSHIP DEVIDE?),less expensive, more affordable.

well i want to noe if n81 has better gaming than n95? as n95 has 3d hw acelerator and n81 doesnt have it? so which is better?
December 21st, 2007 at 3:03 am
Why are people getting so upset over this? Software, games, films etc are always being delayed. When it’s ready it’ll be made available… it’s not as if your life depends on it
December 21st, 2007 at 3:16 am
I think that time just before Christmas was the best time to release N-Gage 2.0 because it would be a great present and many people waited a long time for it. I am really dissapointed to know that we will have to wait another month for release.

Lol i think nokia is trying to fail again with the n-gage… why else would they only make simple port games or sim games. If this project was important for them they wouldnt extent their release date 2-3 times!
December 21st, 2007 at 10:36 am
Such a shame Shadowspawn’s great comment about noobs was removed.

Now only moaning is left, ironically.
Of course we all will be using the new N-Gage when it comes out (if it comes, lol!), and i don’t envy the N81 users ’cause their phone is good only for gaming.
December 21st, 2007 at 11:14 am
Just a quick reminder guys: while I understand you feel passionately about this, I can’t approve comments full of profanity. Jaydrive - good suggestion, I can pass it along.
Happy holidays to all!
December 21st, 2007 at 11:26 am
Haha deathbringer, the n81 is a little underpowered compared to the mighty behemoth that is the n95, but its still a good and worthy device, certainly with the same quality music player (thank you nokia for a worthwhile music player at last!) and of course the gaming setup. But it is still capable in the areas people feel let down in, like the camera (i use my cybershot if i need a quality picture!) and lack of gps (i’d use a tom tom if i was driving anyway, my brothers n95 is really slow for navigating) the 81 still has more than enough to keep me satisfied in the stakes me a convergance device! People will have thier favourites, mine happens to be the n81! Peace out x

Hello N-Gage Team,
I’ll not introduce myself, as after all, I’m just a random person that uses the beauty of streaming bits to relay a string of text to you through the global network that is the internet. I’d like to tell you I fully understand the delay.
I was one of the first to buy an N-GAGE in the Netherlands (with Tony Hawk) and I was thrilled by the little thing. The calling and lack of hotswap were a letdown, but with the accompanying headset the calling problem was annihilated. The hotswapping was fixed by getting a big MMC. I loved the N-GAGE, it worked perfectly. Until, one day, yup - indeed: WSOD.
I hesitated about getting a QD, but no native MP3 support was unacceptable so I bought another N-GAGE. I still have that one now, so many years after the release. If I’m out, Pathway to Glory, Asphalt and Tony Hawk are still loaded every now and then. I never went Arena, but I might just do that when the new platform launches.
Being a game developer myself, I fully understand what is happening. Although I do agree that testing could’ve been a bit earlier, game development is about adaptation and working with delays and problems. I’d rather see you use a few weeks to polish everything rather than to have to upgrade my firmware next week. In other words, I can’t wait to get my hands on the N81. Like someone said before me: It’s done when it’s done.
Ignore the foul mouths and prove them wrong.
Best of luck, merry christmas and happy new year!

Hi!
I love my ngage[qd]…I can play games, movies, music, see my documents/ppts. It’s the best phone(sorry to call it a phone) I ever had.
I am looking for 2 feaures in new ngage…
1> support for voip on gprs/edge connections
2> access to messengers like skype/yahoo/msn on this with their clients (no fring like cross network connections)
Will they be available?
Thanks.
December 23rd, 2007 at 1:35 am
Nokia’s flagship for the new N-gage, The Nokia N81 has one SERIOUS FLAW
The phone has sound lag/delay in ALL SYMBIAN and JAVA GAMES.
And it’s ruining the gameplay.
Hope this is one of the bugs they will fix before the launch, or else, all gaming-press will be over this and the N-gage will get bad reputation in the media.
December 23rd, 2007 at 2:34 am
Why on earth have Nokia hung on to the accursed Ngage brand, instead of launching it under a fresh name?
Also, I think a lot of people on here should put video games aside until they have theis spelling and grammar up to scratch.
December 23rd, 2007 at 11:07 am
we need more infos….!
December 23rd, 2007 at 1:33 pm

Merry Christmas 4 all and 4 Nokia.
December 24th, 2007 at 12:57 am
Don’t you think it’s time to close further comments to this blog now?
After the initial disappointment….what more is there to say? It’s not going to happen this side of 2007, lets deal with that and enjoy Christmas. We can look forward to an n-gage new year! Hurray!
December 24th, 2007 at 6:07 am
as always, new stuff dosen’t come in the right times. But, i expected that nokia should make the deadline… I’m not so pleased over my cell(n95 8gb) anyway, so good luck all of u nokia users, see u when u go over to the working brand SonyEricsson. Im sick and tired on Nokia!! Merry christmas and a happy new year.
December 24th, 2007 at 7:13 am
well, i was also waiting to get my hands on these games, but come on guys, give nokia a break. I really prefer everything to be done without major issues. Thus i dont mind to wait a bit more. My only wish is that n95 8gb would be also included in game testing…
December 24th, 2007 at 7:39 am
are you kidding ?
what a shame nokia…
i feel a lil bit underestimated buy your n81
just said you will never launch it
just give us n81 owner to do the beta test !
December 24th, 2007 at 4:45 pm
when will the software be ready 4 the n73
December 25th, 2007 at 6:54 am
playing the test game for the n-gage on my n95 8gb ive been anticipating the full launch. I cant wait for the release, but i will. The longer we wait, the more time nokia can make the whole experience worth while. Take as long as you like guys.
December 25th, 2007 at 7:41 am
Very dissapointing. Very. But the sad thing is I’m not at all surprised by this, given Nokia’s track record in regaurds to how they have handled the N-gage brand. I love my N-gage classic as much as the next guy, and I would never dump on Nokia or N-gage just for the sake of dumping on it, like the biased gaming media did from day one. But when the next generation of N-gage was announced, in they way it was announced, I couldn’t get my hopes up, I just said I’ll wait and see.
When your trying to earn a customers buisness, your reputation with that customer is probably the most valuable asset. I want so much much to be on board and welcome the next gen, but as with the first gen, Nokia keeps flubbing things up with us the consumer. And it’s just not a good way to win buisness. They won me on the capabilies of the original device, but outside of that, there was this experience Nokia promised us that wasn’t totally delivered upon. Like politicians, you gotta be careful what you promise your supporters, because if you don’t make good on them they won’t support you very long, hence all the complaints in this forum.
I have to disagree with jay (lol though I normally agree with him on other things) I don’t think we a consumers made any mistake by overhyping this launch. Nokia created the hype, they put the ideas in our head, they suggested ( I don’t want to use the word promise here, to be fair) this experience on our mobile phones that would rival the console experience but is customed for mobility , accessibilty and global community. They wanted us to be hyped, its in the best interest, because that’s what is gonna sell the platform. You build that kind of hype, then you burst everybodys bubbles, repeatedly over and over. First this thing was promised in the spring, with very vauge and very little details. Then it got pushed back to summer, Then fall 07. Then we were for certain gonna get this thing going for the holiday season, and now its pushed back to 08. For a person still trying the overlook the pitfalls they put the first gen in, this doesn’t paint a very good picture . You get the feeling that Nokia just can’t handle this aspect of the business they way it should for it to be successful, and you feel like you gonna be in for the same song and dance we got the last time, that didn’t quite happed the way it was forseen. Thats exactly why I couldn’t rush out and buy a N81, because after getting pushed back the first couple of times, I just said, here we go again, best course of action is to wait and she how it does before I take a blind leap of faith. Because that’s what it would have been given the reputation.
I think they may have really hurt their foundation by not getting this thing our before Christmas. Nokia wants so much to make gaming a focal point on phones to where its rivals and even surpasses traditional game machines. And if they could get things to come together it could happen. N-gage could actually be a big selling point for a phone. But now you’ve got a bunch of potential customers, who know nothing about N-gage because of the lack of exspoures, lack of presence, and dissapointed N-gagers, and they are gonna be getting their new Iphones/pantechs/choclates/ voyagers/ ect. The N-series could have got a big push from N-gage, gaming isn’t a strong suit on any other phone device, but now its like you missed a big chance to cash in on that.
In the future probably the best thing Nokia can do is not hype up gaming on a phone as much as they do. Do like other companies, put the focus on the phone being a smartphone, with games as kind of a secondary function, not a primary one, and let the gamers find out themselves how good the games are, then hope maybe people will buy them up like they do with the traditional java games. Nobody bought a motorola XXX because they could play Tetris on it, but they probably found later that playing tetris on my phone is pretty cool. Unless they can put together a better plan to promote gaming on a phone, like Nintendo and Sony have for their portable devices, that will make a consumer want to jump on board because of the games, Nokia should be more low-key about this, instead of frustrating consumers to no end with constant delays and blurry details.
December 25th, 2007 at 7:52 am
For us to be a disgruntled as we are about this, it goes to show that their is a consumer base who does finding gaming to be a very big deal when it goes to a mobile device. Nokia has all the resources and the tools at their disposal to pretty much own this market. They can do things Sony & Nintendo can’t in a traditional dedicated portable console. But it just seems like things can never align for the ol’ N-gage to where they can actaully stake their claim in the industry.
December 25th, 2007 at 4:28 pm
HEY YOU ALL CALM DOWN! DON’T YOU HAVE OTHER THINGS TO DO THAN HANGING AROUND LIK JUNKIES :-)). IT WILL BE OUT IN SOME WEEKS SO RELAX AND WAIT. THE ONLY HING WHICH WOULD BE NICE WOULD BE IF THERE WERE MORE DEMOS LIKE FIFA SO ALL UNPAITENT PEOPLE COULD PLAY AND WAIT FOR THE REAL GAMES. THINK ABOUT IT NOKIA!!!!
December 25th, 2007 at 6:12 pm
Congratulations. The tech delay is bad enough, but whoever is in charge of marketing this one has really fallen asleep at the wheel. Seriously, I hope no one is picking up a cheque for this no hype, no taster, no interest donkey show. The fact that Nokia have chosen to persist with the name of one of the most universally derided and least missed consoles in gaming history, a brand not worth a brass farthing to serious gamers, is another show that someone in that firm really needs to pick up their feet and actually find out what it is people want.

December 26th, 2007 at 3:11 pm
when is the REAL n-gage app gonna come out?
December 27th, 2007 at 12:28 am
Many developers have complained over the years of incomplete releases. Multiplayer games are hard to create. Releasing software early to fit a deadline maybe fine for some large players but Nokia policy now is to release when working as near as possible to give a good experience to consumers. This does mean that marketing dates can disappoint, but EVERYONE would want as close to 100% to get this right.
December 27th, 2007 at 11:58 am
So this way, already I can see it. There will be confidently no platform generally speaking and Nokia will be dragging it away ad infinitum…
December 27th, 2007 at 1:56 pm
I am feeling that nokia is going to surprise us before xmas, I hope so, otherwise it will be a shame.
December 27th, 2007 at 4:06 pm
Do people never learn from their mistakes ?
December 27th, 2007 at 9:25 pm
I sure hope it comes soon…
December 27th, 2007 at 10:04 pm
What? Delay? How long could i wait to see the result? I hope to play soon….
December 28th, 2007 at 5:00 am
Eugene;
The phone with 3D Engine is better then better!
So N95 8GB is top!
December 29th, 2007 at 12:54 am
Did they even have opened beta testing? or was it all closed? All i know is if it actually gets done it better be perfect.(i know it won’t be) Not like the wait matters, 95% of the world has no idea there is even a new n-gage/service coming out. nokia’s PR should actually show the world what nokia has to offer. i am tired of stumbling upon Nokia news. Show us what u make and stop relying on websites, reviewers, bloggers to get your products out there. i am still puzzled why ppl want iphones over n95. Just kidding i know why.(apple marketing > Nokia’s). And my n73 plays 3d so choppy i know i will need to get a new phone for n-gage games, not to mention the joystick sucks for games, what was nokia thinking…. WE NEED A REAL CONTROLLER.
December 29th, 2007 at 7:53 am
wow.. uhm, is it coming out the download ? cause i not long got a N82 and was hopping whether is this the place to download n-gage application in the phone ? i cant really play fifa now cause it has limted rounds to it -.-, so. err please put a link towards the download ? hahas hope it’s gonna be fast, first time using a nokia phone =X.

Although I want the N-gage application tow ork when I get it I am more than a little annoyed, I kept my original n-gage for a long time waiting for a new generation to come, finally in November I bought a N81 on contract, so for the last couple of months I have been paying for something I cannot use. So all I can say is there had better be plenty of freebies available (and not just demos) when the application is released to make for the messaing around Nokia have caused us

So, where is N-Gage??? I am sick N tired of waiting for it.
Anyway; I think that a lot of people have lost their interest for N-Gage… Im not very impressed about new N-Gage. 3 pet simulators!!!! For who??? We need real games like some FPS (like Half-Life); or good MMORPG (like World of Warcraft)…
Why are only few phones supported??????????????????? N-Gage could success only if you support cheaper phones (like 5700 or 6120). No one is going to buy expensive phone only for gaming. I have Nokia N73; but I think that other users should get N-Gege support, too.
So, hurry up with N-Gage application, and I wish you luck with new N-Gage.
Happy New Year

obviously there are some problems that holding them from the release. if there is a problem when its released users will be moaning and complainging about the problems and bring a bad reputation to n-gage. you have to think of things from more different angles. i am sure Noka are well aware of that you bunch of idiots will be moaning when its released with loads of problems. just be patience its not like your gonna die over a mobile phone game. play fkin flash game online… END OF

Please give use a date, coming soon could be any time. I said I’d never go back to nokia after the last handset but I could see a lot of improvements coming from you. I purchased a N95 hoping it was something special. I’ve played games I used to play on on my first PC. Played Gameboy Advanced games on my N95, but when I heard N-Gage was coming I could not wait. Day after day I have seen the release date slip which does not bother me but coming soon is very slim information indeed!

Please let us know when your ready!

Of course Nokia have hyped n gage! How do they expect to sell anything without giving it hype? The PS3 and Xbox 360 were both hyped like crazy, and there was a huge overheating flaw with the first 360s to be released, and the PS3 was delayed due to inability to produce the required components. Hype leaves you thirsty for more, and while nokia have had their stumbling blocks on the way to this launch, it will be worth it for us the consumer to have a working product. I hope that the release time is soon, because i am nearly sick of waiting. But just because i’m unhappy at the wait does not mean i will not download the application. It is free and the reason i chose this n81. I suspect a lot of the users out there (in fact i believe nearly all the users out there) who say they will not be getting ngage actually will, as it is a free download, and they will play a couple of demos. Not all will buy games, some will be left sorely disappointed with the hype and delays, but most will buy one or two. I am very disappointed with the delay, but i will be one of the first to sample n gage when it comes available.

Oh and as for raveys comment about the brand of n gage, i believe there are a few good reasons to leave the brand name as it is.
Firstly, the brand name itself is worth a lot more than people think. It is still a name which people associate with nokias attempt to get in on the handheld gaming scene, and whilst commercially it was a flop, the name is still out there and associated with the handheld market. If nokia were to remarket and rebrand, it would cost a hell of a lot more than just the resurrection and facelift given to the brand.
Secondly, the platform is embracing one of the critical success stories of the original, and that is arena. Whilst the phones and a fair amount me the games were slated for various reasons, the online gaming community was praised.
This brings me into my third point, which is about the community. The original sidetalking or rubber ring n gages are cult icons, and have a die hard following. Nokia is staying reasonably loyal to these fans, and i assume it must have been a hard decision to remove support from these devices. By retaining the brand name, it brings in the old communities, those who left, and those who never went away, and is choosing to build on it.
Fourth, i don’t think nokia felt they had a choice. Any new gaming brand would automaticaly be referred to as n-gage 2 anyway, and would be shown as a move that nokia admitted it had made a mistake.
Phew! Rant over! Peace out x

Something must have gone horribly wrong with N-Gage.
I mean up until the last delay on dec 20, we had weekly blog entries. Since then, communication has been none existant.
What’s going on here ????

For those who said it was unfair only N81 owner get free games I only have one thing to say:
I bought N81, because it said it was the new N-GAGE, its now been more than 2 months, and I have a phone, that does the same as many other models, with bad camera quality (VERRRRRY BAD) and no N-Gage… The phone is now a lot cheaper and i dont know why I bought it…

[N-Gage Blog] [...]
