Vote for the Best N-Gage Concept
Mobile Games Innovation Challenge Top 10 Developers!
An independent panel of industry experts from across the globe has spent the past few weeks deliberating through over a hundred entries to come up with a shortlist of the most innovative mobile games concepts.
The competition was launched in April 2008 and called for mobile game developers to submit concepts that will help drive mobile gaming to the next level, relying on the advanced features and functionality of N-Gage-compatible devices, and Java- or Symbian-based Series 40 or S60 Nokia devices. Go to competition website for more information
Top 10 concepts - vote for your favorite!
Top 10 developers and their concepts are listed below. Please choose the one that in your opinion would help drive mobile gaming to the next level. Or leave your comments about the concepts to the Comments section at the end of the story.
#1: Active Tecnologia e Consultoria Ltda. (Brazil) - Cinemarena
Cinemarena envisages an interactive cinema or even an entirely new category of games to be played by viewers in a movie theatre using cell phones to control their characters (avatars) which are shown on the big screen.
#2: CreatePlayShare (India) - Ball
A Ball inside your mobile phone with which you can play any ball game from any genre and do anything with the ball in much the same way as you can in real life. With Ball, users can also invent, create, play and share their own newly created games.
#3: A Different Game (Sweden) - Ghost Wire
Ghost Wire is a casual collection and adventure game, where you use your mobile phone to communicate with ghosts. Your mobile phone is used as a medium to find and collect ghosts that exist around you.
#4: Eclipse Interactive (UK) - Watchers
Watchers is a conspiracy adventure game that uses Nokia Maps and other real world tools to find locations. Players must explore these locations to uncover clues and use all their wits, and any means necessary, to find out who they are, why they are trapped, and who’s behind it all. It’s supported with episodic gameplay and offers players the chance to provide content to challenge other fellow conspiracy theorists.
#5: Int13 (France) - Kweekies
Kweekies is an Augmented Reality virtual pet game that allows players to interact with their pet by utilizing the embedded camera of their mobile device.
#6: Jadestone (Sweden) and C4M (France) - Melokey
Melokey is a music game for mobile phones where you will learn to master songs and play them against others in-game characters and competitors to win the hearts of your fans. Once you’ve got the hang of how to master the play interface via the immersive single player campaign, you can start playing your own favorite music - not just on your own but together with friends if you like.
#7: LemonQuest (Spain) - Wave Pirates
Wave Pirates merges a fun action game with the most innovative controls and playability. You are a fearless pirate navigating the seven seas, looking for gold and glory while the music, including songs you take from your own mobile, makes the waves flow according to the melody.
#8: Onur Yazilim (Turkey) - Comet Hunter
Comet Hunter is a 2-D shooting game which combines the excitement of shooting with natural sound effects made by the player him/herself. Players shoot by creating firing effects with their lips, mouth and teeth.
#9: Simlife (China) - XDancery
XDancery is a mobile music game. Players can touch the screen, draw patterns on the screen, shake the phone or sing into the phone to hit the music tempo notes. Based on the Bluetooth Connection between their phone and PC, players can even play it by dancing in front of their computer screen! What’s more, the game can analyze any music in MP3 format and generate new games for each different music automatically, that means players can enjoy millions of new games after installing XDancery. It’s a game which integrates music, fun, health and relaxation.
#10: TechnoBubble (Spain) - Fun Cam
Fun Cam is a mixed reality game. Connect your camera phone to the TV and point the camera at yourself. You will see yourself on the TV screen and you could interact and manipulate with the objects that appear around you. Mixing the reality with the digital world in your TV using your phone as a handheld console and motion-controlling sensor.

To rock the industry
“The Mobile Games Innovation Challenge has demonstrated the huge potential of this industry on a global level, and the innovation that can be applied to mobile games,” said Mark Ollila from Nokia Games Publishing.
“We’ve seen some groundbreaking ideas and some really unique concepts. It just goes to show how many creative minds there are out there and it really looks like we’re going to set out what we wanted to achieve with this Challenge - to rock the industry. Everyone’s now talking about the awards ceremony and we’re looking forward to an exciting outcome,” Mark continued.

It’s really hard to pick one. You could’ve at least gave us multiple choices, or a chance to highlight our top 3.
First choice: definitely Fun Cam
Second Choice: Comet Hunter
Third Choice would be a close call between Ghost Wire and Watchers. I’d have to go with Ghost Wire though, since we’re talking about “Innovation” and I just read an article about something like Watchers going on in Japan.

Is Ball going to be something like Cube?

Anyways, I’m voting for…
*drumroll*
GHOSTWIRE!

Comet Hunter sounds pretty interesting. My second would be XDancery, third (not sure) Funcam / Ghost Wire. I don’t quite understand the innovation with Watchers. Looks like the good old treasure hunt games. Maybe the descriptive text is not quite innovative?
October 23rd, 2008 at 2:58 am
Heh, Fun Cam isn’t much of an innovation too, the only innovative thing in it is that the phone is used for that. Seen such things years ago.

Hi,
I’m the main developer of Kweekies.
Kweekies is an augmented reality virtual pet game with online competition, the pets are cute creatures from an alternate reality world, the competition is based on offline training of the creatures followed by online matches between kweekies.
A prototype video of Kweekies will soon be available on YouTube, meanwhile you can see a technology preview of our Augmented Reality engine for mobile here :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4FAKjfppp0
The characters shown in this video are unrelated to Kweekies.

TechnoBubble have the most amusing games I ever played.
October 23rd, 2008 at 7:27 am
Nokia used to do something like “Watchers” with their annual “Nokia Game” events, which had a very devoted following.
They stopped doing Nokia Game when N-Gage launched, which IMHO was a bit of a mistake as it would have been a great way to promote the brand. Maybe they could bring it back to promote the next gen platform?
October 23rd, 2008 at 9:55 am
My choices would be Wave pirates and Melokey. Not kweekies coz there r already 3 games of the same genre, GL Petz, creebies, spore origins… Wave pirates and Melokey r totaly different from rest of the Ngage titles.
Thx

Fun cam should be a game for my computer not for mobile phone.
comet hunter seems have a different concept then others, should be fun,
watchers is a hide&seek game can be found in some sites…
nothing really attracting for others

Great comments guys, keep ‘em coming. Thanks for stopping by Stephane and sharing that link, and good luck in the competition.

The “Comet Hunter” game seems (shall I say “sounds” :O ) like a great innovation since it is the combination of player’s natural sound and the software. I think this is something “new” and “exiciting”. Thinking that I was/am shouting, screaming during the sessions, it will make sense now : D, congratulations! Looking forward for your adaptations on famous FRP’s (with player’s sound) Thanks again!
Fun Cam is my second favorite.

comet hunter seems really interesting, I would like to try it..
October 24th, 2008 at 1:03 am
Command a ship with our own voice effects, Comet Hunter is very innovative. It does, with its voice command technology, what multitouch does to touch screen technology. Keep going.
My other favorites are Melokey and Xdancery, they are artistic, I hope their implementation brings in what they promise.
I wish good luck every competitor in the event.
October 24th, 2008 at 1:59 am
Melokey is my choice, as its a different genre from rest
October 24th, 2008 at 2:12 am
OKay, now with a fresh mind, i revisited the poll to make a choice, and it turned out to be… Ghost Wire.
Simply just because it’s not that hard to make a game out of that, there was an excellent example called Virus K1ller, an improved and localised version of which was even distributed with Nokia 3230; there is no alternative on s60v3 and on other devices, the controls should be pretty easy and well, it’s fun to see the world in a different way (if it’s going to be like i think it should).
A little rant about the others:
1. cinemarena - you aren’t going to think that there could be made something real, and more important, exciting, out of this;
2. ball - doesn’t go well with the point pickups, and there is no information about controls, but i actually liked this one
3. ghost wire - as said above;
4. watchers - it’s either going to be uk-only or somehow related to your placement, anyway “anywhere anytime” concept doesn’t suit running around the street just to play the game;
5. kweekies - well, maybe a nice idea, but… pet games, save us from that please, we had enough…
6. melokey, wave pirates, xdancery - music games, don’t fall into innovation category at all;
7. comet hunter - an excellent idea (bravo), but i wouldn’t enjoy doing poofs and blasts by my mouth for 2-3 hours continiously…
8. fun cam - not a mobile game, can’t do much out of it; just a demonstration of a useless engine.

“Comet hunter” seems to be a revolution in future mobile game concepts. Thank you for your first step to free our minds in mobile technology. Now we expect one step more from Onur Yazilim. I hope you can win the prize for your next investments.
October 28th, 2008 at 7:05 am
The votes for comet hunter look a bit suspicious now…
October 28th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
Hey!
As the designer of Comet Hunter, we are so happy to be in the Top 10 among other great game developers. We believe most of these concepts are really innovative and will draw significant attention.
We do monitor the voting since the first day with great exciment. It’s been wonderful to hear from people discussing about the ideas, commenting on what they like & dislike.
We are delighted to see that Comet Hunter draw the attention of not only forums and blogs but also the press in various countries.
Internet is a free medium by nature. There are objective/subjective comments. There are constructive/destructive people. There are people trying to be supportive, people competing/hating/loving other people. We have no means to control what people do or say.
Comet Hunter, is designed to bring fun & fun only
We worked hard to create something new, like all other teams. The last thing we would like to see is, our efforts being subject to a voting-mania. Please feel free to cancel its votes or to remove it from voting.
We would like people to vote for what they really like, not what they are told.
We wish the best for every team listed in Top 10 and we hope to welcome you in Izmir, Turkey!
Comet Hunter Team

None of the above attract me. I’d rather see something like little big planet from the PS3 appear in n-gage. A game, where users with a simple user interface can create and share playable content, physics based puzzels, adventures and more. Mix it with with commerical grade buyable content this would rock, enslave and endure. Either get a license from Sony or invent your own. There is plenty of prior art in this game field to design an own unique interpretation.
The concept description of ball comes close, but not close enough.
